In a little over a month, France's socialist government is going to introduce legislation to legalize same-sex "marriage" and adoptions by couples who think it's trendy for kids to have two mommies or two daddies. Philippe Cardinal Barbarin, France's most senior cardinal, thinks these are bad ideas.
Speaking on a Christian radio station this weekend, the prelate warned that the legalization of gay "marriage" would manifest a breakdown in society, and would open the door to the normalization of other sinful perversions, such as polygamy and incest.
"This could have innumerable consequences," the cardinal said. "Afterward they will want to create couples with three or four members. And after that, perhaps one day the taboo of incest will fall. The first page of the Bible, which says that marriage unites a man and a woman, has more force and truth, crossing cultures and centuries, than incidental or transient decisions made by a parliament. This is a choice of the government with which we do not agree."
Bishop Dominique Rey of Fréjus-Toulon also entered the debate, demanding a popular vote on gay marriage. "A referendum must be held to allow a real debate and to make sure the government is not in the grip of the [LGBT] lobbies," he said. "A majority of the population agrees with the traditional view of marriage."
