Stick shift foils Florida carjackers

Quirky news item from the land of sunshine and raisins. [Ahoy, ahoy, Agent 17. How did you miss this one? Ed.] In St. Petersburg FL, two carjacker wannabes gave up trying to steal a 2007 Nissan when they discovered that the car was equipped with a manual transmission.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that a man and his girlfriend were leaving his workplace early this morning when two men pulled a handgun on them, and said if the couple didn’t get out of the car, they would get a sudden and severe case of lead poisoning.

The couple jumped out of the car and the perps jumped in. They got the car started, but weren't able to drive away. St. Pete Patrolman Barney Fife [Ed., please check name] said the carjackers couldn’t drive stick, so they gave up and ran away.

Authorities are looking for the usual suspects. For a complete description, read the full article in the online edition of the Times. Don't expect any surprises.

PS: Just thinking... what were the man and his girlfriend doing at his workplace until the wee hours of the morning? Putting in some overtime, perhaps.
